Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
Why do we have a PTA?
We are fortunate at our school to have a PTA that’s an integral part of the school community. Over the last few years we have raised thousands of pounds, which has helped contribute to school life. As well as raising funds, we help to help build relationships between parents, school and our wider community.
How do I join the PTA?
All parents, teachers and governors automatically become members of the PTA, but of course we would love as many people as possible to be actively involved. This can be as big or as little a time commitment as you like. It can be as simple as sending the occasional idea our way or jumping right in and joining our committee and helping to run events.
Who is on the committee?
Our current committee comprises Emily Nobes & Carina Rawlings as Co Chairs, with Alison Mitchell as our Treasurer. You can contact us on checkendonPTA@gmail.com, or approach any one of us in the playground. We also have a group of committed parents, grandparents, school staff and governors who regularly attend our meetings. Everyone is always welcome!
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Our Annual General Meeting is held at the start of the autumn term and provides an excellent opportunity for all parents to come along and hear in more detail about our work, the events we have run, the funds we have raised and how the money has been spent. It is also when we elect our new committee members.
How we raise money
Like most PTAs, the majority of our funds are raised through the events that we run. Annually we host a fireworks night, Christmas fete, hold bake sales, run an Easter trail and sponsored events. In summer 22 we will also hold our first ever jazz night! We are always keen to explore new ideas and try out new ways of raising money.
How you can help A really easy way to support us is to sign up to easyfundraising.co.uk and select Checkendon School Association as your cause. Thousands of retailers are part of scheme and will then make a small donation for every purchase you make. We are also registered with Amazon Smile (again as Checkendon School Association) a website offering the same products as Amazon’s usual site but each time you shop, the Amazon Smile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the cost to your chosen charity.
You could also find out if your employer offers matched giving. Many companies pledge to match a sum of money that employees either raise or donate to a charity. This is a great way of supporting us, either through your own sponsored activity or by helping to run an event.
How we spend the money we raise
The PTA committee are responsible for deciding how our PTA funds are spent. Usually the school provide a ‘wish list’ of items that the school would like us to consider funding. We also invite input from parents too, so if you have an idea of something that would benefit all the students in the school, please do share it. We can discuss it at a meeting and feedback. In the past we have helped the school to purchase a new piano, books, school musical instruments, as well as supporting the annual programme of creative events including writing week. We also supported with the installation of the nature trail around school.
How we keep you up to date
We send out emails to everyone in the school. Keep an eye out for our blackboard notices and follow on social media channels on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Like our posts, share our events and get involved!
