Respect, integrity, courage, compassion and hope

Welcome to Acorn Class 2024-2025

Acorn Class is the first home of our Reception children, and we strive to set them up with a really secure and positive foundation as they embark on their learning journey at Checkendon.

The Foundation Stage at Checkendon is play-based, with the children making the most of our fabulous natural surroundings and enjoying free-flow between the classroom and the garden.  The initial focus in Early Years is on the core skills of Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; and Communication and Language.  As the year progresses, we will introduce them to daily Phonics activities to support their emerging reading and writing skills; and a daily Literacy and Maths activity to prepare them for the Key Stage 1 Curriculum.

Our learning is based around the children’s developing interests so please do let us know if your child has a particular passion or an interesting experience to share. We aim to provide a happy and nurturing environment where every child knows how much they contribute and how much they are valued.

Teacher: Mrs Adamson

Teaching Assistants: Ms Gibbons and Ms Gomm

Useful Information

On Fridays we have Forest School, please send your child into school dressed in their base-layer clothes (suitable for the forecast weather) together with a separate wet-bag containing waterproofs and dry socks. The children keep their boots in school so they are always available, and we will send the wet clothes home in the bag they came in. It is also very helpful to have a change of clothes in their PE bag to cover accidents and adventures!  Please make sure everything is named, if it goes to plan we end up with a big pile of wet and muddy clothes to sort through!

Our PE day this term will be Thursday.
