Checkendon School Association consists of all parents who wish to play a role in advancing the education of the children of Checkendon School. The Association is led by an elected committee, and has been an integral part of the school for many years, raising many thousands of pounds over the generations which have been spent on improving teaching equipment, providing a wide range of resources and experiences for education, augmenting the facilities in and around the school.
But it is more than just fundraising. The School Association also exists to provide closer links between home and school, and is an excellent way of bringing staff, parents and friends together socially in support of the school, not only to raise money but also to work together towards a common goal.
As with most schools, the majority of the funds we raise are achieved through the events that we run. Some of our most popular events include the Checkendon Fireworks Night, various barbeques and school fairs, including the summer fete, the Quiz Night, the annual Sponsored Walk and recently, an exciting Circus held on our school field.
Our commitment is to spend the money we raise to support and facilitate projects and events that would not otherwise go ahead - and in doing so, to add value and fun to the educational experience here at Checkendon. The School Association liaises closely with the Headteacher and staff to determine priorities for the school, and each year a ‘wish list’ is drawn up so that when funds become available, specific items can be purchased. We have provided a considerable amount of equipment for the school as well as for the school playing field, have funded laptops, dance and ceramic workshops, subsidised school trips, brought the pantomime to the school, and we also like to provide ice creams and treats at our various school events.
The School Association is open to all parents and encourages members to take as active a role as they feel they can. Members elect a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary annually at our AGM, held in September, with each person able to hold a post for a maximum of two years, so we are always looking for new members to join and to become involved with the committee: it is great to get fresh ideas - and of course, the more people involved in the organising, the less work we each have to do as individuals.
School Association meetings are held on average every 6 weeks, always on a weekday evening, and are relaxed and informal. Being part of the School Association enables parents to get to know each other and the school a little better, and also to contribute to our children’s education and welfare by helping us raise much-needed funds as well as organising an exciting programme of events for the whole school community.
